Warm bamboo massage - bliss or beating with a stick?

When I think about adding a new treatment to our salon menu, I always like to try it first just to check it lives up to all the hype and would be something our clients would benefit from. So yesterday after spending all day bent over my computer I thought it’d be a great time to try the latest massage faze – warm bamboo!

It sounds fab and a new twist on the old favourite hot stone massage. Warm bamboo massage was developed in Florida around 2 years ago so isn’t all that new but as with most treatments they take a while to filter into the UK.

The principle of bamboo massage is not so different from Swedish massage, using the same pace and rhythm but instead of working with their hands the therapist uses warm bamboo of varying lengths and diameter to roll, knead and relax the muscles.

Did I enjoy my experience?

I had been warned at the beginning that it’s quite a disjointed massage because of the changing over of the bamboo canes so I was expecting it not to flow too easily, the transition from one cane to another was actually quite smooth and handled well.

Where I struggled was that I found it quite ticklish and because the muscles had not been ‘warmed up’ with long stroking movements (effleurage) to calm the nerves I was also quite jumpy, if you suffer with your back, you’ll know what I mean.

The jury’s still out on this treatment, I will try it again, one experience is not enough to pass judgement on a new technique but I will say that I didn’t leave feeling like my back had been sorted out and today I woke up and still feel like it’s going to go into spasm.

This is just my personal experience with warm bamboo massage, everyone is different; some people can’t stand the thought of having their feet touched whilst others are in therapy heaven at the thought of a pedicure. If you’ve experienced this treatment feel free to drop me a line with your thoughts.
